Weldability
Welding of API Steels is usually achieved via either Shielded Metal Arc Welding, or by Self Shielded Flux Core Arc Welding processes.
Machinability
API Steels may be machined for the purpose of threading, or machining coupling connections to the exterior.

An Introduction
The American Petroleum Institution, or API, is the standards institute for the American Petroleum and Gas industries. For our purposes, their most notable contribution has been standard API 5L: the standard for line pipes used within the industry to transport Oil, Water and Gas. For the 'X' Grades, the two numbers following the 'X' denote the grade's respective minimum yield strength in '000s psi. The standards commitee recognised the need for two levels of Product Specification Level (PSL): PSL 1, for the quality of regular line pipes, and PSL 2 which specifies further testing requirements for chemical use and mechanical properties.
